It ’s been nearly two months since The Handmaid ’s Tale wrapped up its second season , and that finale is stillmaking us feel things . As the Hulu hit prepare to collect its inevitable mickle ofEmmysin a few week , we have a few things already in mind that we ’d like to see materialize in season three .

Figure out a way to scale back the violence without watering down the show’s message

time of year one spent a mass of clock time establishing how torturesome life is for Handmaids like June ( Elisabeth Moss ) , fertile woman forced into intimate thralldom so that they might produce nipper for powerful twosome . Season two upped the ante , showing us ( to name just a few examples ) the toxic “ Colonies ” where undesirable women are exiled and leave alone to rot ; a mass wedding ceremony fill with teenager brides , include one who ’s by and by publicly executed for daring to look for warmness outside her loveless marriage ; the rape of a heavily pregnant charwoman ; and a Commander ’s married woman being maim for need permission to appropriate fair sex to translate just one book — the Bible . By now , we get it : Gilead , run by religious - zealot misogynist who are also hypocrites , is a poisonous dystopia , and the unremitting threat of torture or death ( not just against women ) is an of import part of what stay fresh everyone afraid and obedient . There ’s no way to tell this history without include some graphic horror . But in season two , the show ’s grim , nonrational elements kind of took over and became distracting , as viewers began to fear seeing what exponentially awful punishment would be hand down next .

As the show presumably move toward an uprising within Gilead , there ’s bound to be even more violence , but time of year three should strive to be a little more judicious when deciding where to sprinkle its extreme cruelty . It will make more of an impact that way , and hopefully actuate the story frontward rather than keeping its role on a repetitious treadmill of misery .

Expand the setting even more

By now , we ’ve seen a lot of Gilead ’s capital city — formerly bonk as Boston — and we ’ve spent a ton of prison term at home with the Waterfords . We ’ve also flummox a good feel at Canada , both the American refugee sphere where Moira and Luke dwell , and the sleek urban downtown where the Commander and Serena stayed on their fail diplomatic sojourn . We ’ve even seen the Colonies , and really , there ’s no need to go back there ever again . give June ’s conclusion to stay behind in the time of year two finale , it ’s fairly sure that we ’ll still be spending a lot of prison term in Gilead — though now that June ’s ( presumably ) public opposition number one , we may see her hide out in some new lieu , interchangeable to her stint lurking in the abandoned Boston Globe office in season two . Beyond that , though , it would be very interesting to see Gilead beyond its central city . Are there other cities or even little townspeople occupy with women in color - put one across outfits ? Is there a frontier or some sort of border crossing ? And since we sleep together there ’s at least a petty bit of the former United States leave — thanks to the American factor who tried to win over Serena to defect to Hawaii — what does life in that society look like ? What does the rest of the humanity look like , for that matter ? And what do they really think of Gilead ?

Continue exploring the story of Serena Joy

time of year two established Serena Joy as the show’smost incense yet challenging character . We already knew that “ before , ” she ’d write an radical - conservative , anti - feminist screed called A Women ’s Place , but flashbacks this time of year also showed us how magnificently controversial she was , almost sparking a scream during a speaking spear at a college campus . As Fred Waterford ’s wife , she helped make Gilead and by extension awfully subjugate all women , something that ’s caused her intimate conflict ever since — and , eventually , outright regret . Of all the characters on The Handmaid ’s Tale , Serena has grown and changed the most , but it ’s been in fit and start ; every time she does something that makes you care her ( forming a clandestine partnership with June to do Fred ’s employment while he was in the infirmary ) , she counters that with something monstrous ( aid Fred rape June , ostensibly to essay to induce labor ) .

But the finale saw Serena — who ’s relieved of a finger after she makes a earnest plea to Gilead ’s loss leader that adult female should be allowed to read the Bible — do the ultimate correct thing , allowing June to take her darling baby out of Gilead . At long last , she ’s realized that no female person in Gilead , no matter her social standing , has any chance at a hopeful future . Even if June is no longer in contact with the Waterfords next season , The Handmaid ’s Tale would do well to continue Serena Joy ’s story , which has reached a turn point that could go any number of ways next . Serena Joy , impedance leader ? It could happen !

More backstory on the Aunts and the Marthas

We ’ve had tons of flashback featuring June , the Waterfords , and even substantiate character like Emily , Nick , and Moira . But we fuck almost nothing , aside from what they ’ve divvy up in bits of dialog , about the working fair sex of Gilead , namely the Captain Cook / housekeeper / maid Marthas and the Aunts , who prepare and manage the Handmaids . Assuming Aunt Lydia survived Emily ’s attack ( allow ’s desire so , since Ann Dowd ’s bitingly mean yet oddly protective performance is one of the show ’s absolute highlight ) , it would sure help us understand her a lot better if we roll in the hay more about who she was before Gilead . ( Dowd herselfhas shared one possible backstory . ) And what about Rita , the now and again wry but generally kabbalistic Martha who serves the Waterfords ? We know she had a son who died fighting in “ the war , ” and that she take a huge risk helping June escape with the baby . Flashbacks or even her own subplot would help flesh out one of the show ’s most enigmatical yet crucial characters . Also , while we ’re wondering about Gilead ’s most mysterious citizens — can Bradley Whitford ’s weird hero Commander Lawrence retort , please , because we have quite a few lingering dubiousness about that guy . And when we say “ return , ” we do n’t mean “ glimpse hang on a wall for allow his Handmaid get away with attempt murder . ”

Have an endgame in sight

The Handmaid ’s Tale istimely , important , and incredibly well - made , but the very nature of its level means that it ca n’t go on perpetually . At a sure point , either Gilead has to stomp out all its protester and adjudicate in for the long draw — or a revolution is blend to have to overthrow its draconian regime . preindication point to the latter , but season two ’s most frustrating flaws hail whenever the report started spinning its wheels ( June get away ! June is re - captured ! ) , and its most divisive moment was dead June ’s last - instant determination not to flee to Canada when she lastly , in the end had the chance . time of year three want to make that choice deserving it ( like , say , allow ’s see June get Hannah back somehow , since that reunion with Luke is go to have to support on even longer at this point ) ; it also needs to show us some impulse toward the rebellion we all fuck , or at least fervidly expect , is fare . A warfare with Canada ? aesculapian breakthroughs to reverse the fertility crisis , as suggest at by that American agent who spoke to Serena in Canada ? A homegrown civil war led by General Offred ? Something needs to happen , and it seems like season three will be the place to trigger off it off .
