Figure out a way to scale back the violence without watering down the show’s message
time of year one spent a mass of clock time establishing how torturesome life is for Handmaids like June ( Elisabeth Moss ) , fertile woman forced into intimate thralldom so that they might produce nipper for powerful twosome . Season two upped the ante , showing us ( to name just a few examples ) the toxic “ Colonies ” where undesirable women are exiled and leave alone to rot ; a mass wedding ceremony fill with teenager brides , include one who ’s by and by publicly executed for daring to look for warmness outside her loveless marriage ; the rape of a heavily pregnant charwoman ; and a Commander ’s married woman being maim for need permission to appropriate fair sex to translate just one book — the Bible . We ’ve also flummox a good feel at Canada , both the American refugee sphere where Moira and Luke dwell , and the sleek urban downtown where the Commander and Serena stayed on their fail diplomatic sojourn . We ’ve even seen the Colonies , and really , there ’s no need to go back there ever again . give June ’s conclusion to stay behind in the time of year two finale , it ’s fairly sure that we ’ll still be spending a lot of prison term in Gilead — though now that June ’s ( presumably ) public opposition number one , we may see her hide out in some new lieu , interchangeable to her stint lurking in the abandoned Boston Globe office in season two . Beyond that , though , it would be very interesting to see Gilead beyond its central city . Are there other cities or even little townspeople occupy with women in color - put one across outfits ? Is there a frontier or some sort of border crossing ? And since we sleep together there ’s at least a petty bit of the former United States leave — thanks to the American factor who tried to win over Serena to defect to Hawaii — what does life in that society look like ? What does the rest of the humanity look like , for that matter ? And what do they really think of Gilead ?

Of all the characters on The Handmaid ’s Tale , Serena has grown and changed the most , but it ’s been in fit and start ; every time she does something that makes you care her ( forming a clandestine partnership with June to do Fred ’s employment while he was in the infirmary ) , she counters that with something monstrous ( aid Fred rape June , ostensibly to essay to induce labor ) .
But the finale saw Serena — who ’s relieved of a finger after she makes a earnest plea to Gilead ’s loss leader that adult female should be allowed to read the Bible — do the ultimate correct thing , allowing June to take her darling baby out of Gilead . We ’ve had tons of flashback featuring June , the Waterfords , and even substantiate character like Emily , Nick , and Moira . But we fuck almost nothing , aside from what they ’ve divvy up in bits of dialog , about the working fair sex of Gilead , namely the Captain Cook / housekeeper / maid Marthas and the Aunts , who prepare and manage the Handmaids . Assuming Aunt Lydia survived Emily ’s attack ( allow ’s desire so , since Ann Dowd ’s bitingly mean yet oddly protective performance is one of the show ’s absolute highlight ) , it would sure help us understand her a lot better if we roll in the hay more about who she was before Gilead . ( Dowd herselfhas shared one possible backstory . ) And what about Rita , the now and again wry but generally kabbalistic Martha who serves the Waterfords ? We know she had a son who died fighting in “ the war , ” and that she take a huge risk helping June escape with the baby . Flashbacks or even her own subplot would help flesh out one of the show ’s most enigmatical yet crucial characters . Also , while we ’re wondering about Gilead ’s most mysterious citizens — can Bradley Whitford ’s weird hero Commander Lawrence retort , please , because we have quite a few lingering dubiousness about that guy .
