When Ween release their quaternary studio record album Chocolate and Cheese in September 1994 , I was six years sure-enough . At the meter , I was most likely rocking out toRaffi ’s Greatest Hitsor something . tight forward a decade later , feature a more fledged albeit acne - ridden adolescent , and I ’m listening to the weirdest Sung dynasty I ’ve ever hear .
The track is called “ Buenos Tardes Amigo , ” a spanish ballad about revenge , deception , and envenom chicken . All I can remember is thinking of one particular sentence to distinguish what I was hearing : “ This is … odd . ” But I unmistakably loved it . I had just discovered the observational stone band Ween , and I do n’t think I was fain for it .

None of us are because there is n’t a band that ’s like Ween , and no album shows off the group ’s distinctive melodious tastes quite like Chocolate and Cheese . The total track tilt is a genre chameleon transitioning among funk , phratry , stone , and of course , spanish ballad . The record album does n’t take itself too severely with claim such as “ The HIV Song ” and “ Do n’t bullshit Wear You Eat , ” but it can also still attain you where you hold up with tearjerkers like “ Baby Bitch . ”
It ’s one of the few albums that exists on this satellite that I feel comfortable saying offers a small bit of everything . Even now , listening to Chocolate and Cheese still call forth that same response . This record album is unexpended in only the good way potential . [ Stereogum / Spotify ]
