Avengers : Endgamewas a riot of flashy fight and fan military service , with enough humor thrown in to sometimes feel like a great comedy . It was silly andnonsensical , but above all it was entertaining , and when it want to rack up the emotional , dramatic beats it commonly boom them . Yet there was a detail in the picture show where I found myself distrait from the sheer inundation of fun — when it became clear that the many , many sinewy heroine of the piece were n’t quite on equation with the Heron . They were props , there to indorse the tarradiddle of the guys . Endgame did its woman no favors and it ’s time we talked about it .
The point that drove this home for me was really a moment I ’ve see praise by others : Captain Marvel returns from her two - hour foramen in the motion-picture show to collect the Infinity Gauntlet from Peter Parker . Sure , he and the audience just saw her destroy Thanos ’ ship in a flash , but he still demand how she ’ll get through an full army to birth the gauntlet to where it needs to be .
We then get a bragging splashy shot of almost every single woman in the film , chests puff out heroically and fall by a murky Sunday through a swarm of debris . There are so many adult female , and among them are the two most powerful fictitious character in the moving-picture show not named Thanos .

But it ’s just a brief shot , one that feels more like someone meting out a diversity cookie than lifting up a grouping of characters who almost always take a back derriere in both the film ’s narration and itsmarketing . Ultimately , the women do piddling more than look cool and buy some time before Iron Man , Captain America , and Thor can do the actual work . And there ’s a pointed absence from the tableau . The original woman Avenger , Black Widow , is n’t there . She die an hour originally .
The Black Widow Problem
This is n’t the first timeBlack Widow has been a stage of contention . The female founding member of the MCU ’s Avengers previously had a storyline that was deeply problematic . In the Joss Whedon - calculate Age of Ultron , the fictional character does little more than ferryboat folk and their things around , and admits she can never truly love or subside down because her deep , sinister assassin secret is … she was sterilized in the Black Widow program .
Who would have think that would end up being one of her meatier second in the MCU films ?
After perform little more than a cameo in Infinity War , Natasha shows up in Endgame as a woman frequent by her failures and desperate to protect what piffling of humanity remains . While the men of the Avengers have gone off to encounter themselves , or a family , or a six - pack of beer , she ’s hunkered down and build a connection of remaining heroes . Which is passably great ! She ’s the only Avenger really doing something — and when they determine to get the band back together so they can quantum burrow their way into the past to deliver the creation , she ’s the one who volunteers to pick up Hawkeye , who has gone full edgelord and is murdering his mode through other Nation , seemingly to stop malefactor who were randomly lucky enough to survive the death of Infinity War .

Hawkeye winds up being Black Widow ’s pardner for the time rip-off , and the two head to Vormir ( where last we examine Thanos sacrificing Gamora ) to track it down . They soon realize the only fashion to claim the I. F. Stone is for one of them to give that which they love most . One would presume Hawkeye would be all out of sacrifice . That which he loves most is his family … and they all got snapped off in the first two minutes of the movie . In fact , his whole story until this point is that he is a man with nothing left to lose . And you would feign Natasha , who was visibly discomfit by Hawkeye ’s descent into shadow , care enough about him that he could , maybe , be the matter she loves most .
But the film kills Black Widow or else . The scene plays as if it ’s two friends trying to give themselves so the other does n’t become flat , but in an interview withthe New York Times , screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely make it clean that Natasha really want to die because she wanted to see all her Avenger boy happy .
“ Her journey , in our minds , had come to an end if she could get the Avengers back , ” McFeely said .

“ It was melodramatic to have him [ Hawkeye ] snuff it and not get his family back . And it is only right and proper that she ’s done , ” Markus add when the NYT broach the content of the Vormir end race .
These responses only highlight the very monolithic ill turn the film does its woman characters . Hawkeye bugger off to live because he has a phratry ; Natasha , the sterile woman who comes from a bad home , get to die out because her greatest wish is that her found family of hero boys will be happy . She is there to prop him and the other human being up . Her fictional character arc amount to the arc her soundbox gain as it plummets to the background .
Halfway through Endgame , the plant female phallus of the Avengers is beat , with zero settlement of any of her storey . Presumably the many unanswered questions of her past will be addressed inher solo movie , but also , presumably , that film will be a flashback . That ’s a bitter oral contraceptive pill to get down .

And it ’s made even more acrid when a dark Hawkeye returns to the present alone , and you take in the only two eccentric who do n’t make it out of the past times are also the only two female member of the team .
The Nebula Problem
With Black Widow dead midway through the film , it ’s up to Nebula to carry the flashlight for all woman — at least until that diversity cooky moment we already let the cat out of the bag about . She is the de facto lead female character of the film . She is also , notably , not observe once in McFeely and Markus ’s New York Times consultation .
Nebula is basically the cosmic version of Black Widow : a virtuously gray assassin who has a lot of red in her account book who does n’t return from the prison term stickup . Only , she ’s a cyborg . And like Natasha in Age of Ultron , Nebula spends a salubrious ball of Endgame captured by the bad guy wire and subject to monologues .
As the adult male build an Infinity Gauntlet and fight over who will wear it , the real Nebula is question and tortured — while her past doppelgänger toddles around in the present day , where none of the men notice that she has a different arm . Perhaps it is a commentary on the failure of all the virile fighter to consider the women in their midst , but more likely it was a choice by the film producer . Past Nebula demand to ensure her father clip locomote to the futurity so none of the men could notice she had a shape arm when earlier she had a metal one .

But Nebula was n’t the only one written out of the tale so the man could shine .
The Captain Marvel Problem
The Captain Marvel pic premiere last calendar month and hasalready earned over a billion dollars . Like Black Panther , it is something of a phenomenon and Brie Larson has been on a non - stop press tour since well before its premiere . In the majority of press result , she ’s been the charwoman Disney has put forward , both as the raw face of the heroines of the franchise and as the new look of the franchise itself . It was safe to put on she was going toplay a role in Endgame — though maybe not a huge one , given the pauperism for the cinema to also be a swan song for a issue of older , popular characters . But what the film cease up doing with the character feel like a disservice .
Rather then symbolically taking up the sovereignty from an established character , or organically being integrated into the team she will be a major part of going forward , the persona is slot into a role frightfully similar to Black Widow ’s in Age of Ultron : Ferrying hoot .
She ferries Tony from space to Earth , ferries Thanos across a cabin so Thor can decollate him , and then vanish for two - plus minute only to show up and ferry a glove across a field of battle .

Her role in the flick boils down to go thing around , break her new whisker swing , and show off her ability to shine very brightly . As a character , she is virtually non - existent . Some of that can sure as shooting be due to this film beingshot before Captain Marvel . “ We pip [ Brie Larson ] before she germinate her movie . She ’s saying lines for a part 20 years after her origin story , which no one ’s written yet , ” McFeely bank note . Her backstory did n’t exist yet !
But a lot of it boil down to a choice made by the movie maker . They choose to not incorporate her better into the plot or the squad , though these film had beenplanned for long time . “ [ T]hat ’s not the write up we ’re trying to tell — it ’s the original Avengers shell out with departure and coming to a conclusion , and she ’s the new , fresh ancestry , ” McFeely say .
Her function is too big to be consider a cameo or Easter egg , but far too small to be satisfying , especially to those who quick grew attached to her thanks to her solo film . Carol Danvers is so wasted to the story that I found myself questioning why she was even in the movie .

The Cameo Problem
The worst outcome of the film is that the adult female mentioned above … are the chief women of the film . They ’re the ones with the most lines and the most story focus apart from Iron Man , Captain America , Thor , Hulk , War Machine , and … Hawkeye .
Danai Gurira ’s Okoye , leader of the Dora Milaje , was a breakout quality in Black Panther , and she had one of the good lines in Infinity War . Yet she has small more than an extended cameo in Endgame ( fellow Black Panther star Lupita Nyong’o , who represent Nakia , did n’t even show up ) . Same function for Zoe Saldana ’s Gamora , who quietly melt after the final fight ( serving as a point of emotional distress for Peter Quill ) ; Tessa Thompson ’s Valkyrie ; and Gwyneth Paltrow ’s Pepper Potts .
But at least they get to speak ! The bulk of the women in that cool spatter visual of grrrrl force do n’t say a countersign . Evangeline Lilly ’s Wasp was the first heroine to actually get her name in the title of a damn motion-picture show and she has only two or three lines . They ’re squeeze to the side to make way for the men .

And maybe this would have felt hunky-dory if , in the final conniption of the flick , we become some common sense of the future for these characters . But while we spend time seeing where Bucky and Sam — and even well-chosen — are head next , we expend no literal fourth dimension with any of the adult female . Valkyrie is now a queen of a displaced society of god in Norway , and Hope van Dyne is plainly in San Francisco with her fellow and his now - grownup girl , but if there is still a squad of Avengers we have no estimation if any women are on it or what their use will be . We have no clue what is next for Captain Marvel or Scarlet Witch asunder fromwhat Disney has denote .
end game is filled to the brim with distaff characters , but the moving-picture show is content to employ them as prop , and we have no approximation if that will be the same for the franchise go forward — in spite of the fact that the women are some of the biggest and most popular characters leave behind alive . Markus and McFeely ’s bald-headed Bible about Black Widow do n’t cheer hope . They imagine they did something powerful when the killed her off . They did . Something powerfully dazed .
