Anyone whose lifelooks perfectly amazingonlineis probably forge it , and that ’s certainly the vitrine for the menage inHatching . We see the realism of living with a female parent ( Sophia Heikkilä ) who films everything for her blog—“Lovely Everyday Life”—through the eyes of 12 - year - old Tinja ( Siiri Solalinna ) , and we do n’t like what we see .
The first sign that there ’s something unseemly lie in wait behind that lovely sprightliness comes in Hatching ’s first scene . After a family photo shoot , acrowbursts into their pastel wonderworld of a aliveness room , smashing vino glasses and the pendent , and generally introducing havoc into a blank that ’s been precisely curated to dish out as a social - media background rather than somewhere actual humans live on . When Tinja ’s able-bodied to capture the bird , she hands it to her mother , whose entire esthetic is pink , ruffles , and blossom crowns — but who does n’t pause in wringing its cervix ( Director Hanna Bergholm and screenwriter Ilja Rautsi spin a compelling and gorgeously shot narrative , but it ’s overall not a very insidious one ) .
Tinja is 12 but look younger , and her social life is determine to one thing : gymnastics . “ societal life ” is used very loosely here , because her female parent wo n’t let her give ear out with any of the other missy , especially with a big competition on the purview . “ She ’s so weird , ” a fellow gymnast muttering behind her back , and Tinja knows she ’s not awry . Despite the favorable overtures of a girl who move in next door , Tinja ’s only companionship is her mother , a family relationship that ’s off on multiple tier : first , there ’s ma ’s overbearing coming to gymnastic exercise grooming , which annoys even Tinja ’s private instructor ; and then there ’s mom ’s boyfriend , whose presence is apparently approve by Tinja ’s generally oblivious father , but who is still a puzzling figure for the young lady — specially when she has to endure her mother gushing about how dreamy he is .

Into this roiling value-added tax of tween angst and stress comes the thing that makes Hatching a horror film — one that would play rather nicely on a Black Swan threefold bill . Realizing the crow that invaded her class ’s living way has n’t died , Tinja follows its agonized screaming to the forest behind their home and discovers … a nest witha lonely egg in it . The eggs grows alarmingly large at an alarming rate , and it only takes around 20 minutes for the well - pace Hatching to do what its title promises . Then , we get about an hour to see all the wrong the ferocious ( and furiously necessitous ) new life that emerge from it can do .
It would be a bummer to bilk exactly what form that new biography takes , but we will say that Hatching draws from themes that address the joys and frustrations that come up with maternity ; it also dips into an alarming doppelgänger scenario . Additionally , it apply some stunningly distressing body repulsion to instance the agonies of pubescence — at one point , Tinja ’s dada assumes she ’s gotten her period for the first clip , and takes that as an explanation for her unknown behavior — as well as the pursuance for strong-arm perfection . The latter presents itself in the rail - thin Tinja ’s punish gymnastics sessions and all the other physical exercise we see her doing in between , plus the fact that she vomits a mess for … reason , something that will make any feeding - disorder survivor shudder a bit .

The prowess direction merit especial mention , particularly whoever decide to wind this dark , grisly tale in the sorting of bold wallpaper that might look too interfering and gaudy in real spirit — but would absolutely make one ’s on-line follower salivate with envy .
