This poor eyesight in all probability owe to their evolutionary account as burrowers , living in the night where eye were n’t much use .

In general, snakes see shapes, not details.

Snakescalled pit vipers can see well at night by an awe-inspiring trick . Their pits ( one on each side of the head ) sense heat energy ( infrared light ) like night imaginativeness goggles . These pits , not eye , in reality are thought to render images of fair game in the snakes ' genius .

Interestingly , Cobras ' senses are abrupt enough to place for the eyes when spitting venom . They know , apparently , that the venom will blind a human or other foe .
