Last night ’s episode in the new time of year of Caprica , “ Unvanquished , ” was quite just amazing . It bring together disparate thread from the previous season , and showed us how business , crime , and religion are somewhat much the same matter .
While the first season of Caprica focused on two families , the affluent Graystones and the immigrant gangster Adamas , this season has switch emphasis . Now the Graystones are totally interconnected with the Adamas , and the two powerful forces at body of work are the Graystone Corporation ( now run by Daniel Graystone ’s enemy Thomas Vergis ) and the monotheist terrorist movement STO . Both groups are contend to practice technology developed by Daniel Graystone and his daughter Zoe to further their goals to dominate Caprica – whether that ’s financially or spiritually .
Clarice visit religious drawing card “ the Mother ” on Gemenon to demo Apotheosis , a practical heaven based on Graystone ’s VR bands . She wants to employ Zoe ’s somebody digitization technology ( let ’s just call it that in the absence of any other name ) to give members of the monotheistic faith a probability at having an hereafter . That elbow room , she says , religion will not longer require religious belief . It will be a simple fact that if you join her religion ( and possibly pay a monthly approach fee ? ) you are ensure eonian life in a cyber - wonderland .
Even as Clarice is doing the intrigue dance to get the Mother to endorse her program , we see all the ways that it ca n’t possibly work . First of all , as one of the spiritual leaders on Gemenon points out , a practical heaven ca n’t “ storm ” us , and therefore it ’s just fake heaven , and potentially quite boring . Second , we already know how much the digital soul of Zoe has been tormented by her experience – even though she ’s an STO penis . First her soul was stuck inside the physical structure of her founder ’s cylon , but she smashed that eubstance up in a motorcar crash last time of year . So now she ’s stuck inside the virtual macrocosm , just like Joseph Adama ’s daughter Tamara . And imagine what ? V - World is hell , peculiarly in New Cap City , which is the main place everybody seems to hang out .
But why interest about that stuff when there are units to be sold ? Clarice wants to sell her theme to Mother , and is willing to murder Mother ’s closest advisers to do it ( which she does , and which Mother seems not entirely upset about ) . And Daniel is unforced to kill and blackmail his way back into ascendency of Graystone Corporation , which is why he ’s now enlisting the care of Joseph and Ha’la’tha godfather Guatrau to strongarm board members of his former caller into voting him back to his late view . But it ’s going to be problematic going , part because Vergis is churning out the cylons for the military in the way Daniel go to do . And part because his gameboard has turned against him . Even a blackmail attempt fail when the target commits self-destruction rather than do what Daniel wants .
We see some unearthly scenes of Joseph and his brother hazing Daniel before agreeing to help him retake the caller , and they only accord to do it after Guatrau decides he likes the idea of marketing the somebody digitizer to help mourn syndicate reunite with their dead loved ones . Guatrau puts Joseph in charge of the soul - digitise project , and suggest that this whole thing could change by reversal him into a “ made military man . ”
So now we ’ve got two group combat for Capricans ’ immortal digital soul : A corporation riddled with mob link , and a spiritual radical that favors terrorist tactics . Meanwhile , Zoe is track down through New Cap City for Tamara , sword drawn , which could mean a new force will emerge to challenge both . I love watch business and religion conflict to operate the gadgets of the future .
This show , like Battlestar Galactica , is n’t afraid to tell an intelligent , morally equivocal narration . Let ’s trust it stays on course . And gets renew , for frak ’s rice beer .
