Germain Lussier , io9 : What were the big things you wanted to hit going into time of year 3 ?
Jon Hurwitz : We need to bring Ali back . We want to go into Kreese ’s past times and do a whole Vietnam plot line . We want to go to Okinawa . Those were three big tent pole kind of elements of the season that we talked about . Also , our Bob Hope was to play Johnny and Daniel by the remainder together and rag the interview along the manner .
io9 : When youteased the return of Ali at the final stage of time of year 2was Elizabeth Shue already signed on and did you know what you were go to do with her if she did ?

Josh Heard : She was not signed on when we did that . That was an instance of us leading with our confidence and our trust that the Karate Kid gods will smile upon us and and make it happen . But we were actively engaged in speaking with Elizabeth even before then , trying to to deal the love life of what this show is , where we amount from as fans who get to be the stewards of The Karate Kid and wanting to stockpile that part forth into this universe and witness the right fashion of doing it .
But at that time , there was literally no knowledge or path to whether or not it was going to happen or go south . And we aver , “ You know what ? We ’re still finish the time of year that mode . We are going to have to always be optimist about this . ” And it was just very special . A special process and extra rearrival for Ali into the universe of the show and really onto our curing . I have in mind , when Elizabeth Shue walk there , it felt like , “ Here ’s this absent piece of the teaser that might serve Johnny and Daniel fit a niggling better together . ” And there were real goose prominence and real smiles plastered on our faces . Hurwitz : We ’re always look for a surprising direction to bring characters back . And we felt like it would be interesting to have Daniel on that side of the man for another cause and for him to be at a comparative low-toned point where he ’s kind of lost and finds the hook of Okinawa to be too strong for him to not make that spare niggling trip to return to Miyagi ’s homeland , which was a special position in his yesteryear , the parentage of his karate and the birthplace of his wise man . To bring him there in that context where he ’s just sort of turn a loss and search and then incur what he ’s looking for , but in unexpected mode .
And we love that we wanted Kumiko ( Tamlyn Tomita ) to be involved in a way that ’s meaningful , that ties into the relationship from the past tense and the action from the past . And for there to be some Wisdom of Solomon to lend on to Daniel . To impart Mr. Miyagi back into the story in a unlike way than we ’ve ever had before . And , for us , that letter reading prospect is one of our favorite scenes we ’ve ever done on the show . It was such a muscular , hefty moment .
Then to bring Chozen ( Yuji Okumoto ) back … .Together we craft the story that we thought allowed these characters and these worker to shine , but also , admit Daniel to get a line new stratum of Mr. Miyagi and unexampled layers of karate . To do those types of scenes that you acknowledge fans were going to go nuts for , but were meaningful to our present day story .

io9 : How did you come up with the Kreese back write up and was Martin Kove postulate ?
Hayden Schlossberg : go into season two , we had already been thinking about it and we ’re plan to to delve into it . And when we speak to Marty … about the type and his backstory , he had this whole backstory design out that was unlike on the surface , but at its core was very standardized in terms of the injury of Vietnam and being a prisoner of war . So we those were always our ideas . What we wanted was to empathise how this guy we mature up with as the most evil grapheme of all - time could have been a human being once that you might feel bad for … .[Also ] we desire him to be in the substance of darkness and really con “ No mercy ” as a must in living . And the way to do that is to show mercy , and it really not work out for you .
io9 : Was it in fact Terry Silver on the earpiece at the end of the show and could his yield also tick the return of Mike Barnes ?
Schlossberg : Listen , we ’re hardcore fans of all the flick . And let ’s just put it this way . We pass clock time give Terry Silver a back taradiddle in season three . You get to see the past Terry Silver . We treat all these characters from those original movies like they ’re really crucial in the universe . And we do n’t want to say anything official yet about time of year four right now but Kreese see at a photo of young Terry Silver and he dials a number and makes a speech sound call . And you could conceive of who ’s on the other end . So we ’re not making any official argument but , hypothetically , there ’s a circle of interesting soap opera go away to tell that we ca n’t hold back to tell .
io9 : Well , can you say anything at all about time of year 4 ? It surely seems like at least we ’re at least getting another All - Valley Karate tournament .
Schlossberg : That we can say about season four . The stakes have never been higher at the All - Valley .
