Zurich - based designer Florian Schulz hasreimagined Twitternot as a mind - numbing torrent of breaking news , gifs , and German Nazi , but as something else he calls a “ social web . ” We ’re not too sure about this “ social internet ” musical theme , but the results are somewhat challenging , at least in an observational way .

service like Facebook and Twitter show you stuff and nonsense based on newness , relevancy , and popularity . This is n’t inherently a speculative thing , but there are side effect . Twitter , for model , is a good news beginning , but the bottomless timeline honour the most participating users and het up tweets . Everything else gets forget . Twitter has turned to algorithms to spotlight tweets it think you ’ll care about , but Schulz ’s experiment take a completely different approach , and ultimately get to Twitter more about the people you follow than the GIFs they retweet . In a way , it ’s more “ societal , ” ya know ? You cantry it here .

Like an alternate population , Schulz ’s web app hides everything but the accounts you follow , ordered by reverse - newness . There are no retweets or ads . You blame a timeframe for your “ Inbox ” of tweets by knock or clicking the clock ikon on the top leftfield of your screen , and the avail will show you answer for establish on whoever ’s most recent tweet is the old . When you clack on a exploiter , you ’ll see their most late tweet .

Charles M. Schulz explains : “ Someone who tweeted a calendar month ago is picture first , someone who just tweeted , all the mode down at the bottom . In my compositor’s case this revealed a few people who last tweeted 7 years ago . ”

But , like , why ? Here ’s Schulz on this ( emphasis ours ):

You might think that this design would make you want to look at every single person ’s recent tweet in order not to miss anything . Or to scroll to the bottom to see the most recent news . If you follow one C or thousands of people , yes , that would be a lot of oeuvre . But here ’s the thing : by veil distracting content and focusing on hoi polloi , this pattern does n’t lure you to front at everything and or else advance you to choose consciously .

In my timeline on the service , prefer to see tweets from “ All Time ” was like a splash of insensate pee — a aggregation of people I ’ve lost sense of touch with , deserted accounts , and old usernames I registered days ago and have abandoned . But selecting something more reasonable like “ Today ” or “ Yesterday ” did something interesting : It dislodge less - active , but still latterly - combat-ready , accounts to the top of my list .

You may not find this data-based service effective or enthralling , specially if you ’re a news addict . But it ’s not a bad way to overhear up on tweets you ’ve missed and it piss Twitter feel a hell of a lot calm — if not a little bit timeless . That ’s quite a feat . Twitter was n’t designed to ferment this fashion , and that ’s kind of the percentage point .
