The lead track of Cymbals Eat Guitars ’ ( fantastic ) soph try Lenses Alien , “ Rifle Eyesight ” can be problematic nut to crack . That ’s why I ’ve been reluctant to soundtrack all this fourth dimension . There ’s a eruditeness bend , but fuck it ; you guys can hack on it . That is , if you really want to . And you should .
You see , Rifle Eyesight is a large birdsong . It ’s a journeying . It ’s a hike . It ’s generate that same chill - enducing sense of rank enormity that you ’ll hear in “ And The Hazy Sea , ” but the path is a winding one . “ Rifle Eyesight ” does n’t have a really good hook to latch onto . rather , it has a bighearted collection of extended , complex - but - wondrous - melodic trills . Except there ’s small repetition , and they ’re break before you could really slide down your teeth in . And if that was n’t enough to estrange you , there are some esoteric focal ratio gibbousness where affair slow down to almost static .
Also it ’s fucking long .
But god damn if it is n’t amazing ; there ’s so much there to make love . Full disclosure : when this line came out in late summer 2011 ( oh wait , two years ago yesterday ! holy shit ! ) I must have listened to it 20 time before it clicked , but the payoff was so deserving it . And to this day , I maintain that 7:20 - 8:13 is the practiced 53 seconds of music to take heed to at ear - shattering volumes . relegate none .
