The Vampire Diaries had the audacity to namecheck Buffy the Vampire Slayer , not to remark what might have been a nod to Xena Warrior Princess , in last night ’s installment . Can we forgive such insolence , from a show where the master female fictitious character is kind of a victim - yttrium doormat ?
Yes . Yes we can . Spoilers ahead …
in reality , last night ’s Vampire Diaries saw Elena making several Brobdingnagian steps fore , into the realm of actual heroine as opposed to just “ sympathetic protagonist . ” It ’s been a longsighted fourth dimension since Elena was just a passive victim — last season , she pretty much train burster of all the preparation when it come to dealing with Klaus and his floppy - hairy crony Elijah . She was the one who took Elijah by surprisal and stabbed him with the magic obelisk , and later she was the one who decided to pull the magic obelisk out . She put a stop to the whole “ sacrificing Bonnie to kill Klaus ” gimcrackery . Elena ’s been more and more unattackable for ages now .
But it was still a pleasant surprisal to see her getting her Arnie on last night . She ’s plainly feeling entirely crushed and vulnerable at the start of the episode — something that we do n’t get jammed down our throats . Instead , we just get jot , like her fingering the bitemarks on her cervix . She goes to meet Mr. Sexypants , I mean Alaric , who ’s doing Vampire Slayer education , and he recite her brutally that she ’s not strong enough to gain vampires sufficiently toilsome to trigger the pestilent spike launcher on her articulatio radiocarpea gadget . But then Alaric add that she find a path to get out of bed this morning , which means that in all the slipway that matter , she ’s the strongest person he screw , and she can do anything . She nod .
And this leads to :
1 ) Elena lifting weights and getting creepy / seductive vampire - kill advice from Damon , in the clip above .
2 ) Elena hatching a plan to lock Stefan up until Klaus is out of the path , so he can detoxify from all the human blood .
Because Stefan , meanwhile , has decided to stalk Elena at school as part of his “ protecting the human lineage bag ” thing . In keeping with Vampire Diaries ’ theme of not running anything into the footing , we get about three or four scenes of Stefan being a horrible stalker , take after by a few scenes of Elena giving as safe as she fetch . Elena totally zings Stefan with the whole “ I ’m not going to get a bloodaholic separate me how to imbibe . ” Elena proves that even if Stefan is vicious now , he ’s still not all that smart , and she can still play him like a mandolin .
( And meanwhile , Tyler is being a hybrid douche and Rebekah is trying to steal Caroline ’s life , and Bonnie is being a jealous twit over Jeremy hear ghosts , and Jeremy is kind of stuck on ghost Anna , and Katherine chance out first - paw why it ’s not a great theme to wake the lamia / vampire - hunter . )
Unfortunately , the Original Witch is trying to practice Ghost Vicki down Elena so her line ca n’t be used to sire any more vampire / werewolf crossbreed — so Elena grow out to need Stefan ’s trade protection after all . But Elena still designate that she ’s gotten stronger by the end of this sequence than she was at the outset of it — by getting Stefan flop in the breadbasket with the radiocarpal joint gadget , and hit him hard enough to trigger the spike .
That , boys and daughter , is called fiber development . And it ’s why we can allow the Buffy reference .
