When you look through Miles Teves ’ on-line conception art portfolio , it ’s hard not to feel sad about how nerveless Terminator 3 and Terminator Salvation , plus a Dune movie , could have looked . And his design for Spider - Man ’s Goblin is understandably higher-ranking .
Teves is not shy about tell that his concept nontextual matter for some of the most in high spirits - profile films of the past decade looks cooler than the designs the movies ended up going with . On his site , he laments the fact that everybody seemed to like his Green Goblin design , “ yet somehow , in the mixture of Hollywood nonsense , we ended up with that horrible , unwieldy , Kabuki mask in the film that everyone agrees is one of the worst villain costumes in modern movie theater . ” When we interview him , he referenced the Green Goblin graphics once again , as something that had been passed over for “ less designs . ”
We asked him what his favorite art object of construct artistic production was , and he responded :

I just did something for a movie coming up called ‘ Your Highness ’ that is pretty fun and wicked , but I have no melodic theme if the idea will survive the process and be in the flick . amazing piece ? I would have a heavy metre pointing to a piece I did that I view to be actually ‘ awesome ’ . But , there are a few things , like the fiber of Darkness in Legend which , when I see on the screen , brought to life by a peachy worker , is still a thrill . Robocop as well . Pirates of the Caribbean . I am more gallant of a small donation I might make to a good film , than to a liberal contribution I make to a defective moving-picture show . Some of my beneficial study was done for films that never came to be , such as the employment I did for XO .
But at least we get to look up to his work with films like the latter two Terminator film — and how cool is it that he haphazardly sneak in Thomas Dekker into some of his illustrations of Skynet hardware for Terminator Salvation ? evidently he lick on Terminator Salvation very early in the operation , when the handwriting was still in fluxion , and he came up with a Terminator assassin that ’s close-fitting to the T-800 design , but more or less boastful , clunkier and even more menacing , if that ’s possible .
Here ’s what Teves has to say about the lifetime of a Hollywood concept artist :

A concept creative person , more often than not , shows up every daylight to work after a long commute across Los Angeles , only to work in a drear and mouldy environment , devoid of windows , crammed in a minuscule space with other illustrators , and has a output designer hovering over them often art directing their pencil or stylus even before it is finished making it ’s first fortuity . If one is golden , and the product decorator has a long encounter or is go for the daylight , one can actually get some originative workplace done .
There is no ‘ glory ’ . work weather condition are often terrible . The Art Director ’s Union provides no guaranty of a credit on the picture ( something they bargained away back in the 60 ’s ! ) , although our donation to the big tent - perch pic we work on is immeasurable , we are given no real appreciation for it . Though it is now well-worn for writer to lift idea from our oeuvre and incorporate it into their script , they get residuum for their work and we get nothing . We are the first employ on a job , and the most easily forgotten at the closing of the occupation . Today ’s big effects films are so visually repulse that we practically pen and direct the film , yet are never acknowledged for it , and are in fact , designedly kept down so that we do not get an theme of how valuable we are to a production .
Also , production are get more and more clever ways to farm out work to non uniting artists in all corners of the world so that they do not have to give good rates and benefit . All these things are eroding away at our little corner of the diligence .
