Turbulent motion is a tricksy concept to convey to the public without recur to complicated numerical par . But what if you could take those abstract opinion and turn them into a dance ?
Elizabeth Hicks is an astrophysicist with a PhD from the University of Chicago whofounded her own non-profit-making labto explore the intersection of science , engineering , mathematics , and art . Megan Rhyme isa terpsichorean and choreographerwith a longstanding interest in science . The two women fulfil through various science and art outreach program around Chicago , and found themselves wonder what would happen if they tried to translate Hicks ’ scientific interest in turbulence into the motility vocabulary of dance .
The result is “ Far From Equilibrium ” a modernistic dance do to medicine by Philip Glass and the Kronos Quartet that will make its launching Saturday good afternoon at Chicago ’s Museum of Science and Industry . Rhyme tapped a few dancers she ’d worked with previously and held opened auditions to fill out her company of seven . To help fund the effort , they launchedan IndieGogo run , which runs until October 20th .

“ Far From Equilibrium ” is divided into three sections , each commence merely and building to full “ troubled movement . ” The first section is built around the concept of convection — what Hicks describes as “ the instability that gets you into turbulence . ” suppose a pot of water on the range . Nothing much happen until you twist the heat up , at which distributor point it get down to uprise and flow , then house of cards and form bubbles until it pass on full boil .
Next , there is a segment on energy scales in turbulence , where the dancer ’ movement occurs on pocket-size , average , and large scales ( rightful turbulent motion happen at all scale leaf at once ) as the Reynolds number increase .
Finally , there is a section exploring the unlike shapes of the swirling maelstrom that characterise helter-skelter troubled motion . “ Angular impulse increases when a ballerina spin around and it ’s almost like these whirlpool are being whirl up , ” Hicks explained .

Hicks and Rhyme will be manning a John Wilkes Booth at the museum ’s yearly Science Works on Saturday , a calling bazaar designed to infix new citizenry to job chance in science , technology , engineering and medicine . At 1 premier , the performance will start , with both women and their troupe on hand to answer questions afterward .
“ Far From Equilibrium ” premiere tomorrow , October 17 , at 1 PM in the rotunda of theMuseum of Science and Industryin Chicago .
