It ’s finally come back ! Fringe , the show that started as a flat X - file cabinet ringer and became a quirkily glorious epic poem about interdimensional war , is finally on its way back to your television covert on Friday .
We ’ve project the first two episode of the time of year , which offer a middling just jumping - on point for newcomers to the series . On the minus side , though , they ’re plausibly less geared towards long - term fans of the show . Spoilers in advance …
periphery set out decent up in decently creepy-crawly style in the first two episodes . There ’s one monster - of - the - week risky venture that may turn out to have tenacious - terminus branch for the season ’s spark . And then there ’s a new enjoyment of the show ’s “ alternative universes ” premise , that I ’ve never seen done before in quite that way .

We pick up more or less where we leave off — Peter Bishop is still erase from chronicle , and nobody remembers him . Because of his absence seizure , a few things are dissimilar here and there , including one rather startling change that actually caught me off guard . And meanwhile , there ’s a kind of burrow between the two Earths , locate on Liberty Island where the “ First People ” machine is in both universes — and people can now cross more or less freely from Earth Prime to Earth Two , or whatever we ’re calling them . There ’s an uneasy truce between the two human race .
So thanks to Peter being erase , everything is new all over again , and we ’re all rediscovering the Fringe universe from gelt — newcomers and ex-serviceman alike . To make things even more “ jump - on point”-y , the Fringe team get a new member in the season undoer : the Lincoln Lee of our population , who has never see the Fringe team before in this version of reality . We see through Lincoln ’s eye , as he bump the secretive and acute Olivia Dunham and gets sail up into a world of secret .
So the good news is , the first two episodes have reasonably ego - contained plots , with just wind about the season ’s arc . And we get reintroduce into the Fringe Earth moderately gently , with the minimum of infodump . For entrant , it ’s an introduction to the universe , while for fans , it ’s a chance to see how thing are unlike without Peter .

What ’s the bad news program ? Well , neither episode only knocked our windsock off . They ’re both reasonably typical of Fringe “ teras of the week ” episode , in which there ’s some creepiness and mystery , but the stakes stay low . ( Although the first episode may wind up up having long - terminus branching , they ’re not search much within the episode . )
And — slightly more serious spoilers here — the show is feeling badly Bishop - deprive . Peter is basically out of the impression , although there are soupcon about how he could render . Meanwhile , because Walter never had his grown - up boy in his lifespan , Walter is a handbasket compositor’s case who ’s afraid to leave his laboratory . This intend that Walter never pass away out on emplacement to investigate case , and instead of awesome scenery of Walter interacting with the world , we ’re forced to be content with a few ( true terrifying ) panorama of Walter being a lunatic in his lab .
And it ’s not immediately clear what ’s going to replace the “ warfare between universes ” as the new axis of the show , although I think there are hints .

So , to sum up : These episodes are a pretty great introduction point for your friend who have n’t yet checked out Fringe . ( Which is large , since we need the show ’s audience to grow . ) And they ’re a fun example of what Fringe can be , when the squad is out solving case and dealing with some of the world ’s creepy masses / creatures . But for long - terminal figure fan of the show , they may leave you crave more of the show ’s great strengths : the chemistry among its three track , and the intense mythos . No doubt , though , those thing are coming .
