Yesterday the United States Congress passed the Genetic Information Non - discrimination Act ( GINA ) , whichbanshealth insurance companies and your employer from using your genetic information against you . This is a major dance step in the good charge , but does it go far enough to prevent a dystopian , Gattaca - style future ? The newfangled billhook prevent most forms of favouritism against citizen from private industry , but what about the regime ? What if Congress decided they could attain genetic purity by screening all US citizens for their disease ? No one ’s saying it ’s potential , but there are some things that do n’t add up * about the new note …
Fact : There is n’t any language in the bill covering government action mechanism to discriminate against its citizens . There are still masses in this country calling for racial segregation and some of them , likeStrom ThurmondandTrent Lottwere in Congress until 2003 ! Who ’s to say a unexampled stock of DNA - ground eugenics supporters have n’t already lead off inflitrating the government ?
“ But the bill ’s been passed , ” you say . “ Show me even ONE of these cistron - racialist you address of ! ”

A fair challenge …
Exhibit A : Tom Coburn , Senator from Oklahoma . Last fall both the House of Representatives and Senate voted irresistibly to pass GINA into legal philosophy but Coburn mysteriously stymied them all , blocking the bill for eight month . Heclaimsit was to revise the broadside to make it harder for people to action companies for secernment , but he is a medical MD . As a doctor he should have been 100 % behind the bill , so why the oppositeness ? We may never know until it ’s too late …
- This is of course , spit - in - cheek … GINA ’s a great poster that should be spat , even if it does mean we ’ll never get to play the function of genetically - fallible Hero in a dystopian time to come .
