The National Labor Relations Board file away a surprisal complaint on Wednesday accusing Google of illegally surveilling and sack two workers who had tried to constitute a pairing at the tech heavyweight . What ’s so surprising ? The Trump government is n’t on the nose known as a defender of labor rights .
Google fired several employees in 2019 over what the company called in aninternal memoranda , “ vindicated and duplicate infringement of our data security policies . ” Those policies included enjoyment of work calendar apps for protest organizing , a policy the NLRB says did n’t in reality live before they were fired according to the raw complaint .
Two of the fired employees , Laurence Berland and Kathryn Spiers , have identified themselves as being named in the novel complaint , though the written matter that has been supply redacts many of the names take .

“ This ailment makes clear that workers have the rightfulness to talk to government issue of ethical business and the composition of management . This is a meaning finding at a time when we ’re date the top executive of a handful of tech billionaires consolidate ascendency over our lives and our society , ” Laurence Berland said in an emailed financial statement to Gizmodo .
“ Workers have the right to talk out about and organize , as the NLRB is affirming , but we also know that we should not , and can not , cleave off ethical business about the role management wants to play in that smart set , ” Berland continued .
But Google says the company supports labor rights and insist that the workers who were send away attached “ serious violations ” of Google policy .

“ Google has always worked to support a culture of internal discussion , and we place Brobdingnagian trust in our employees . Of course employee have protected labor right that we strongly support , but we have always taken information security measure very in earnest , ” a Google spokesperson tell Gizmodo via email . “ We ’re confident in our determination and legal position . Actions undertaken by the employees at outcome were a serious usurpation of our policies and an unacceptable breach of a trusted responsibility . ”
Some initial coverage of NLRB charge has been misleading , even suggesting that Google has been found “ shamefaced ” of violating the rightfulness of these workers . And while it is indeed surprising that anyone associated with Donald Trump might pursue a typesetter’s case for prole , this is just the first measure in a recollective process .
As Josh Eidelsen , a labor reporter for Bloomberg News and Businessweek , explained in a late Twitter thread , this casecould take yearsbefore any kind of arrangement or ruling is attain , and even then , thing can be appealed . But the workers who made the complaint are at least pleased that they ’re being taken earnestly .

“ This week the NLRB issue a ailment on my behalf . They found that I was illegally fire for endeavor to help my colleagues , ” Kathryn Spiers , another worker who was fire , say in a assertion to Gizmodo via email .
“ confrere and strangers believe I blackguard my role because of Trygve Lie tell by Google direction while they were retaliating against me . The NLRB can order Google to reinstate me , but it can not reverse the harm done to my credibility , ”
The NLRB auditory modality before an administrative law justice will take place on April 12 , 2021 , provided a settlement between Google and the former employee is n’t reached before that . Again , this is a very recollective process .
