Falling Skies ’ recent ( and penultimate ) season start out off to a rough start , with Nazi reeducation camps , Tom Mason as a mask superhero , and Tom ’s daughter Lexi as a creepy-crawly cultus - leader . But over the past few weeks , this show has seemed to discover its groove again . At least somewhat . Spoilers again …
The actual plot , the retiring yoke calendar week , has had to do with Tom regain a near integral “ beamer , ” or alien starship , and devising a plot to fly it to the Moon to destroy the Espheni base up there . And then the perverse superbeing Lexi turns up , having discovered that the aliens really are malign , and saves the mankind in the nick of clock time .
This is in keep with every season of Falling Skies — each time of year always starts out with the humanity in awful straits , unable to fight back . And then in the last few instalment , the human race invent “ mech bullets ” or witness out that they just have to destroy one Espheni fundament to sabotage the attackers critically , and the season cease with world scoring a not bad triumph . Nothing incorrect with nonplus to a make headway formula , I guess .
But meanwhile , as the show has veered back towards its traditional centering on the embattle survivors of human race fight aliens , the relationships have come to the fore again . The great speciality of Falling Skies has always been its fictitious character and its focus on the Mason folk and their relationships , and the show has been play to that specialty a bit more .
In particular , the kinship between Tom and his new married woman Anne has had some really nice moment — right after their shotgun wedding , Anne realizes that Tom ’s egomania is getting out of control and he insists on lead the probable - suicide foreign mission to destroy the Moonbase . When everybody else insist on drawing names out of a hat to adjudicate who go , Tom rigs it so his name get out . And the conversations between Tom and Anne about this are awful as well as warm . They ’re feeling like a substantial brace in a mode that they did n’t quite when they were debate what to do about their half - alien girl .
Also , for whatever reason , I ’m kind of turn over the love triangle between Hal , Ben and Maggie . Ben has had a thing for Maggie for a while , and now that she ’s get alien spike taken from Ben in her neck , she and Ben have an irresistible attractive feature . What ’s heavy is that this is played not as the two crony fighting over her , but as Hal having to grow up and realize that he does n’t own Maggie and she has to make her own choices . ( Although he cook kind of a mean joke about her in all likelihood espouse their vernal blood brother Matt , as if she ’s just working her way through the Mason boys . ) Any time Hal and Ben get to share a real scene together , it becomes obvious that Drew Roy and Connor Jessup have done a lot of oeuvre on make them palpate like real brothers .
Matt , meanwhile , is go through adolescence and being a tug — I could probably do without some of this , peculiarly so presently after Matt nearly get everybody killed by trusting his lady friend from the reeducation camp . But Maxim Knight really sells it , and it ’s kind of neat to see an adolescent on television who is n’t whiny at all .
I even liked how thing played out with Pope and Lady Pope — he determine she ’s back to using drug after her big proclamation that she was going blank , and it reverse out she was just taking acetylsalicylic acid or something . Pope feel genuinely betrayed and gets on his high knight about it , and she in reality manages to make Pope realize what a prick he is .
In any case , if you ’ve taken a break from Falling Skies , it ’s worth observe the last twosome episodes , which find more emotionally grounded and thus more entertaining . The two - time of day season coda is this Sunday , so there ’s time to get caught up . I ’m kind of stoke to see them in reality get off Earth at last .
