Tron alight up our puerility with the tender bluish glow of cyber - revolution . But how does it hold up now , after all these year ? Can it live up to our pink wine - tinge memories ? We decided to re - watch over it and find out . Spoilers !

Tron really is the poster - kid for nerdstalgia , as oppose to regular nostalgia — it ’s a movie that had a huge encroachment on a whole generation of nerds , with its beautifully shiny word picture of lifetime inside a virtual world . Other art object of science fiction are more influential in pa refinement as a whole , or have spawned ideas or ism that have reached tons of people . But Tron has a unique place in oddball polish , as a source of meme and imagination . The costumes , the lightcycles , the catchphrase …

I think a lot of us were watch by surprisal by how much the “ Tr2n ” test footage at Comic Con 2008 thrilled and ravish us — it was like seeing an former admirer after a long absence , and it fulfil a col we did n’t even make love we had . It was n’t like most SDCC marketing , huge and clumsy , visible from a prospicient way off — it came out of nowhere . In that moment , we all actualise how much we still love Tron .

I had n’t actually watched Tron all the way through since I was a tike , and I was n’t sure what I was going to think of it after all these years . Was it go to be a horrifying disappointment ? I had listen from other people that it does n’t really remain firm the trial of sentence that well , so I was sort of dreading watching it and having my house of cards burst .

And then I at last re - watched it , and I had sort of two reactions simultaneously :

1 ) It ’s a seriously fun movie – it ’s actually more playfulness than I recall .

Greenworks

2 ) It does n’t live up to the plug at all — but that ’s more a problem with the hoopla than with the film .

The actual story of Tron is pretty basic . Kevin Flynn is a computer geek who invented five awesome video biz , including the bitchin ’ Space Paranoids . And an evil corporate scumbag appoint Ed Dillinger stole Flynn ’s work and then push him out of Encom , a nebulously defined software company that also relieve oneself teleportation lasers . With the help of his friend Alan and his ex - girlfriend Lora , Flynn decides to investigate Dillinger — but his super - plan , the Master Control Program , zaps Flynn inside the computer using the teleportation laser . There , Flynn is force to recreate a serial of baneful television game until he get out and helps Alan ’s programme , Tron , to end the Master Control Program once and for all .

So yeah , it ’s still a seriously fun movie , that zips along at a super - fast pace . The whole “ being forced to play video recording games for real ” succession , with the futurist Jai Alai game and the lightcycle race , takes a noble-minded total of five minutes — even though , in my memory , it lasted for ages . ( Maybe because I spend a million 60 minutes playing the Tron colonnade plot back in the daylight . In fact , I marvel how much of our rosy retentiveness of Tron are in reality from the game rather than the movie . )

Similarly , to the extent that the movie has themes or ideas , they ’re brought up extremely quickly and then never mentioned again — we get word that Tron “ conflict for the user , ” but nobody ever gives a speech about what that means . At one breaker point , Tron pay back the magic frisbee containing the code that will demolish the MCP , and looks up saying , “ This is the commencement of a whole new order . This disc is the key to our exemption . ” But that ’s the closest we get to a spoken language .

What Tron does have is gobs of lovely setpieces in which picture games are brought to life — in contrast to the other 1980s “ videogame becomes material ” movie , The Last Starfighter , Tron ’s video recording - game recreations are still as fun as ever . ( Do n’t rewatch The Last Starfighter — the lengthy “ hero does n’t desire to be a poor boy any more ” sequence will make you want to slit your wrists , and there ’s almost no starfighting in it . ) Tron has tank , and nerveless cyber - motorcycles , and a unearthly solar sail thing , and there are pew - pew - pew noises , and when you punch someone in internet , it make a kind of tinny electronic honking audio . When the laser digitize Jeff Bridges and puts him into the system of rules , it makes a noise a petty snatch like a acid - matrix printer .

And as much as Tron is an court to the humanity of reckoner and the nobility of programmers , it ’s also weirdly a tribute to mum film — or at least , it feels like that to me . Once we ’re inside the computer universe , everyone is in black - and - white , except for the vivid neon colors lay over over them . mass ’s human face , in especial , search like soundless movie stars , and the actors seem to be doing larger - than - aliveness facial expression to go along with this . And when there is n’t awe-inspiring action and digital violence , there is cyber - slapstick . There is so , so much cyber - slapstick in fact . Jeff Bridges basically antic his way through this movie .

One of the great slapstick sequences in the movie is above , and here are some more of our favorite slapsticky bits , set to Sly & The Family Stone ’s “ Life ” :

I love how that one sentry duty adjudicate he ’d rather climb up to his dying than tangle with Tron . He sort of waves and then proceed splat .

Tron is sort of a forerunner of The Matrix and a million other movies about going inside a calculator — except that here , your physical body really goes within . ( And yes , I know there were stories about sound inside a calculator before Tron , but perchance not movies . ) The mind of physically going inside the computer , and hang out with computer programs , and eating the food that computer program exhaust , is sort of amazing , even now .

And Tron is the stuff of pure grind illusion — computer programme have the personality of their coders , and even look like the people who program them . There ’s a person in the simple machine , and it ’s full of life and ebullience . We meet Walter Gibbs , an older computer nerd who started Encom but has been pushed aside , and his cyber - alter self-importance , Dumont , and they both map the one-time generation of developers who keep the fire of pure love for computing equipment animated . Most of all , Tron promises us that the love of pure steganography will gain out over commerce , corporate megalomania , and crass exploitation . And our programs love us .

And there ’s another sort of Nerdstalgia going on here , too — this movie is an artifact from the geological era when computer games still had one single author , or else of a giant crew of programmers and Jehovah .

And the other thing that remains charming about Tron is its fanciful depictions of figurer life sentence , like the way the program drink glowy pee so as to sustain themselves — this is one of the longer scene in the movie , as Tron , Flynn and their friend Ram get down on the reason and scoop water from a shiny stream into their mouthpiece , representing a power source . The vista where Ram dies in Flynn ’s arms , after discover out that Flynn really is a user , is actually quite touching .

And then there ’s this bit , where Yori tells Tron , “ They have n’t build a circuit that could hold you . ” And Flynn meets his program Clu ’s good friend , a “ bit ” that can only verbalize in “ Yes ” or “ No . ” ( Because it ’s binary , geddit ? )

The other matter that ’s engrossing — and sort of a coolheaded choice — in the original Tron is that there ’s no great gulf between the “ real ” world and the estimator world . Think about The Wizard Of Oz , which is the prototypal story that Tron is copying : Kansas is black - and - white and “ realistic , ” Oz is coloured and unearthly . But Tron goes the other way — the real world is just as Ne - drenched and unearthly - looking as the figurer humankind . There are several shots of the urban center which make it expect just like the Game Grid . When we see Alan Bradley at work , he ’s trapped in a labyrinth of endless cubicles that look precisely like the unearthly cubicle prison house that the program in the Game Grid are imprisoned in . There ’s no distinction between the real world and the virtual one , because they ’re the same , and firing in one imply sacking in the other .

This is a LOT of booth :

Tron work as a fun dangerous undertaking motion picture , a silly piece of escape , and an encapsulation of all our grind fancy from the 8 - bit days . It ’ll be a huge letdown , though , if you ’re expecting it to be a masterpiece , or even a copious objet d’art of worldbuilding along the telephone line of classic Star Trek or Star Wars . It ’s not — the characters are shallow , but also the world - edifice is shallow . Nothing is thought through enough to stick to your ribs , so to speak .

And the moving-picture show ’s plot does n’t really hold together if you cerebrate about it for too long . Why precisely are Alan and Lora so willing to lay on the line losing their jobs to aid Kevin ? Why is Lora coincidentally working on a teleportation gimmick , and how does it manage to zap Kevin Flynn ’s strong-arm trunk into a practical world ? Why does Kevin Flynn pretend to have amnesia for a self-aggrandizing lump of the motion picture rather than admit he ’s a User ? If Dillinger is bright enough to create a super - program like the MCP , why is n’t he smart enough to drop a line his own picture game instead of stealing Kevin Flynn ’s ? ( Update : Various citizenry have point out that Dillinger just wrote a cheat political platform that germinate into the MCP . ) And so on .

And all three evil versions of David Warner turn over out to be picnic — rather of just getting rid of Kevin Flynn the moment he turns up , they decide to draw him to play games until he dies ( or escapes , which he does almost immediately . ) Sark is your standard unqualified nefarious mediate manager , the MCP is just a shouty face , and Dillinger is your classic “ guy who ’s enslaved by the calculator he created . ”

So I was simultaneously thrilled and disappointed by Tron — I enjoyed it for what it was , but I think I ’d build up it up in my mind to be something more . Partly , it was listening to the creators of Tron Legacy talk about their prolongation of this saga — they obviously require the universe of Tron to seem a lot more substantial so they can make it the fundamental principle of a new series of motion picture and television shows . So they speak up poppycock like the character of Flynn ’s program , Clu , who ’s only in two scenes of the original movie . And they talk up the theme and characters of the original motion picture , which laid them out in topnotch - light brushstrokes . If the young movie leave Kevin Flynn any fictional character development , that ’ll be 10000 per centum more character development than he got in the first one .

But also , I do think that a pile of stuff from the original Tron seems big and grander in my mind than it is on film . Like the idea that Tron “ engagement for the user , ” something that ’s barely brought up in the film but which seemed like a grand root word in my recollections . A luck of the big fixed pieces in the motion-picture show are much bigger and more dramatic in my head than in their relatively ready and snappy on - screen versions . I do get the picture and the video game mixed up in my head a fleck . And there ’s just the overall nerdstalgia - factor , which hit everything seem good than it was , especially if it involved pew - pew noises and computers .

I guess in the end , it feels like this is what happen when you attempt to deform nerdstalgia into an on-going dealership , or into money in the main . You risk get something that was a high - octane pane of escapist fun and hyping it up , to the point where it may lose some of its original joyfulness . But if you brush off all the hype and disregard your own exaggerated memories , and just watch Tron on its own terms , you ’ll enjoy the hell out of it .
