When Charles Bolden enrolled in the U.S. Naval Academy for college , he was absolutely trusted of two things . The first was that he was never , ever snuff it to fly airplanes . The 2nd was that he was unquestionably not joining the Marine Corps when he graduate .
Bolden would , of course , go on to do both those things and more , accomplish the rank of major general in the USMC , log over 6,000 minute fly time , and drop more than 28 day in outer space on four disjoined Space Shuttle missionary station . Today , he ’s the decision maker of NASA . In this installment of our What Was It ? serial , he say us how he got there .
io9 : What was it that first exalt you to become knotty in science , and quest for it professionally ?
CB : In my case , it goes back to my childhood . My mom and pappa were teacher ; my mother was a librarian at elementary , halfway , and high school level , and my father was a mellow school instructor , so they really encouraged — mandated , really — my crony and me to study .
But I think the main , key thing that come about was , in middle school day , I had two male instructor farm up in South Carolina ( that was unusual back then ) . One was a math teacher , the other one was a science teacher , and in the case of the scientific discipline teacher , he really encouraged us to get involved in science fairs . I embark on doing skill fair projects , fall in love with it and never looked back . So that was the beginning of my substantial interestingness in scientific discipline .
io9 : Did you jazz from an early historic period that you would go after something space - related ?
CB : Oh , I had no clue . In fact , when I graduated from high school in South Carolina , the only affair I know I wanted to do was go to the Naval Academy , and I did n’t even know why — other than the fact that they had really good looking uniform . I knew that you had to join the Navy or the Marine Corps when you graduated , but the only two thing I knew for sure were : ( 1 ) I was not go to fly airplanes , and ( 2 ) I was definitely not joining the Marine Corps — I opine it was unsafe , and I did n’t want to have anything to do with it . I had been on an airplane once , a picayune plane , when I was eight years old . A booster of mine ’s father had a little Cessna or something , and I was totally unimpressed , so that was it for me .
But when I graduated , and accepted my commission in the Marine Corps intending to be an infantry officer , I receive out I did n’t like crawl around in the clay . An obvious choice was to go to flight school . My wife was really frantic about that , so we went to Pensacola . First clock time I got in an aeroplane then I fell in love with it , and then the rest is story .
I became interested in being a test buffer . It took a number of years of really study firmly , apply over , and over , and over again until I got accept . And then , really , the only reason I got accept into the space political platform was I metthe later Dr. Ron McNair , who was drink down with the Challenger crowd . Ron and I did n’t know each other , but we ’d grow up 42 mile from one another . He came to Patuxent River , Maryland , the property I was working as a test pilot ; we sing for a long prison term about what it was like to be in the spaceman office ; he asked me if I was going to put on , I say “ No direction , ” and he kind of goaded me on and said “ That ’s dazed , not apply . ” So I decided I would , have a bun in the oven there was no mode in the humanity that I would ever be think about . And I got invite by NASA to come to Houston and consultation . I come back after that week and told my wife it was the most incredible experience I ’d ever had , but that there was no path in the public was I going to be accepted — so I went back to being a examination pilot . Months later , on my married woman ’s birthday as a matter of fact , I got a telephone call from Houston saying “ Hey , are you still concerned in come to the space program ? ” So that ’s how I got here .
io9 : aside from the motive of your parents , your teachers and your peer , were there any book or media that inspired you to quest after science ?
CB : I learn science fiction a lot , and for me — not unlike many Thomas Kid from my genesis — Saturday morning time were for give-up the ghost to the theater downtown and consider Flash Gordon . It was either a westerly , or it was a science fiction movie , and my favorite was Flash Gordon . I was a big Lone Ranger Fan , too . And back then there was a cowpuncher named Lash LaRue , who had a whip , and all that stuff — so that ’s what I did , you have intercourse ?
But again , even watch Neil Armstrong set fundament on the moon while I was in flight school , I still did n’t retrieve I ’d ever be in the space programme ; I think it was something too far off . So there , the absolute critical affair in my life , was meeting Ron [ McNair ] , and receive him talk to me about what he was doing and why he think I should go in advance and implement , so that was it .

Interestingly , as Shuttle has phase out , we ’re actively involved in the International Space Station , pupil — when I visit school — are starting to pick up their interest again in exploring . I believe they ’re frantic about the scene of really being able to go into quad themselves . They ’re aroused about secret companies becoming involved . I think a lot of them looked at the acquisition of SpaceX and the Dragon and that got them really excited . Plus you ’ve catch things like Hubble , and we ’ve got the Mars rover , Curiosity getting quick to land . I really intend — what I hope — is that when Curiosity set down on Mars at the beginning of August , it ’s just going to go down on everybody ’s intellect , and we ’re going to see this explosion in interest in scientific discipline the way it was during the Apollo epoch . That ’s our hope , anyway ; we ’ll see whether we deliver .
