Although it ’s set 30 class in the future , Netflix ’s Lost in Space reboot , which debut on Friday , is a very thoughtful and astute take on the mod American atomic family . Here ’s what the new Robinsons had to say about their phratry unit and dynamic — including which members have their own secret handshakes .
The new Robinson family does n’t partake a muckle in unwashed with the original Lost in Space series or the 1997 film ; instead , it ’s been updated to reflect modern class dynamics . For illustration , in this version , parent Maureen ( Molly Parker ) and John ( Toby Stephens ) are separated , but John still connect the one - way settlement mission because — as Stephens put it during io9 ’s visit to the set — that ’s the only fashion he could remain with his children .
“ There ’s this kind of matter of , ‘ Oh , why are they together on this thing if they ’re differentiate ? ’ It ’s like , ‘ If you do n’t take me with you , I ’ll never see my family again . ’ So there ’s that reason for him being there , ” Stephens said .

Parker and Stephens say they identified with the story , since they ’re both parent — something echoed by the immature actors playing the Robinson kidskin , who said the relationships with their own siblings helped inform the dynamics between their character . Of naturally , they ’ve been changed for this version as well ; for example , Judy Robinson ( Taylor Russell ) is in reality Maureen ’s minor from a late marriage . Happily , the show never makes this an way out between Judy and John — according to Russell , John Robinson is her Fatherhood .

The kids seemed to embody their roles between takes : Maxwell was boob around while use his lines , Sundwall was chatting up a tempest in a pair of outsize glasses , and Russell was sitting , quiet and paying attention . And you could see Parker and Stephens occasionally checking on them to make trusted they were doing all the right way . candidly , they felt like an actual family .
“ [ My favorite moments are ] whenever we get together , the family , or do the fully grown mathematical group conniption , ” Mira said . “ It ’s just laughable to be in the elbow room , because the energy is always so skillful , so overconfident . The trick are endless and the laughs are endless . That ’s when it ’s the most fun , when we ’re all together . ”
