In May 2024, Renner told PEOPLEin an exclusive interviewthat his recovery is going to be a lifelong journey despite having made miraculous improvements in the time since.

“I had to accept it for the rest of my life. There’ll be nothing normal or as it was prior to the accident,” he said. “By the way, I’m okay with that. It’s making my life better. I’m healthier because of it.”

“I get to focus more on my health and well-being than I ever did before because I have to,” the Marvel star added. “Recovery will be until I’m out of this old hot mess of a body. It was a way for me to really accept that it is going to be forever.”

That June, Renner shared the harrowing details of the accident in an interview withMen’s Health, in which he saidhe remembered his skull “cracking"underneath the weight of the vehicle.

“It undulates, because there’s four sections of tires with these metal tracks — it pulls it like a tank. I remember every undulation,” he told the outlet. “I remember my head cracking on the thing and it just pressing on me — it’s exactly like you think it would feel. An immovable object and a crushing force, and something’s gotta give.”
