Those planning to travel to visit the world’s top 50 bars may want to take notes from etiquette queen Martha Stewart. In August, the home decorating icon and lifestyle guruspoke with PEOPLE exclusivelyon what is considered to be “acceptable” behavior when traveling and dining out.

At bars and restaurants, Stewart stressed the importance of being polite to waitstaff; eating polite amounts of food at a time; and eating slowly. Stewart told PEOPLE her 12-year-old granddaughterJudeis a prime example of a polite patron.

“She sits straight, she puts her napkin on her lap, she can eat with chopsticks … and she’s extremely polite,” she noted proudly. “We had the most pleasant time, but it really does require pleasant behavior in a restaurant.”

While traveling, Stewart stresses the importance of maintaining a clean hotel room — she folds her towels, returns any hangers to the closet, and wipes down the sink.

“I just can’t bear it when people leave a horrible mess in the room,” she told PEOPLE at the time. “It’s the worst."
